Installation of a stunning building wrap design at Wakehurst in West Sussex

Brief

Our engagement with Kew Gardens and the Wakehurst Mansion Renovation Project (The Mansion: Undergoing restoration | Kew) represented a pivotal moment for our team, creating an outdoor art installation to screen the biggest renovation works undertaken at Wakehurst since the 1970s.

A key requirement of the project was to work in partnership with key delivery stakeholders including restoration experts DBR and acclaimed artist, Catherine Nelson who had created the vision for ‘Planet Wakehurst’, a huge photo montage that would feature plants from across the 535-acre estate.

Taking over 3 months to erect scaffolding around the main public facing elevation of the mansion was then clad in a flat hoarding structure providing a unique blank canvas and opportunity to create the largest art installation ever undertaken by the team at Kew Gardens.

The resulting 1500+ sqm building wrap was finally unveiled in early 2023, an incredible installation born out of close collaboration and attention to perfect detail.

Planet Wakehurst

The impact of our project extended far beyond the confines of Wakehurst Mansion, garnering widespread recognition and acclaim on both national and digital platforms. Featured prominently on prestigious television channels such as the BBC and ITV, as well as numerous online news websites, our installation captivated audiences and attracted a surge of visitors to Wakehurst during this its most transformative phase.

Completed in early 2023, the Planet Wakehurst façade has continued to transition across the seasons captivating visitors and evolving into a focal point for the Glow Wild event held at Wakehurst during the winter months. This event in particular utilised innovative projection mapping techniques to breathe new life into our artwork, illuminating the night with a spectacle that captivated the imagination and further solidified Wakehurst’s reputation as a hub of creativity and innovation. Lavastar also delivered a small run of hoarding signage as part of the package.

Looking towards the future, our commitment to sustainability and innovation remains unwavering. Following the removal of the installation, we envision a new chapter for our banners, as they are repurposed into a myriad of products under the banner of Heavens Yard, our newly launched side business. From deck chairs to sports ground protection sheets, each product serves as a testament to our dedication to sustainability and our belief in the transformative power of art.

What They Said

"With Lavastar we created not just a wrap for a building but one of the biggest outdoor artworks in the country. An artwork that worked to drive visitor numbers not just disguise a giant scaffold. This would not have been possible without the work, communication, commitment, adaptability and professionalism of Ed and the team."
