What are street flags?
At Lavastar, we class street flags as large-format printed flags that are repeated along a tensioned wire, spanning from one side of the street to the other. You’ll most commonly see branded street flags in major cities such as London, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow, where large-scale events or placemaking initiatives play a big role in attracting footfall. Used well, street flags can completely transform a streetscape and give an area a strong sense of identity or occasion.
A typical street flag is fabricated with a top and bottom pocket, allowing a galvanised steel wire to pass through. This wire is then securely fixed to buildings on either side of the street.
What are street flags used for?
We’re most often asked to quote for street flags for sporting events, new development launches, Pride celebrations, Royal ceremonies, or simply to create a bold, patriotic display using Union Jacks.
One of the biggest advantages of street flags is visibility. In areas with high footfall or slow-moving vehicle traffic, the message stays clear and readable. Installing multiple rows of flags also allows messaging to be delivered gradually along a journey, rather than relying on a single visual hit.
What are the best materials for large outdoor street flags?
We offer a range of environmentally friendly materials suitable for street flags, but choosing the right specification comes down to a few key considerations.
You’ll need to think about whether you want light or wind to pass through the fabric, how long the flags will be installed for, and the overall size of each flag. These factors all affect durability, appearance and performance in exposed outdoor environments.

Will I need planning permission?
In most cases, yes — but we always recommend checking with the local authority, as requirements can vary from city to city. Installations often involve fixing to multiple buildings, which will usually require landlord approval as well.
If you’re installing street flags in a city such as London, you may also be able to make use of existing wire fixing points. Many streets already have infrastructure in place for Christmas lighting during the winter months, which can sometimes be repurposed.
At Lavastar, we can support your project from initial planning right through to installation, helping to make the whole process as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
