From London’s Shard to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, tall buildings are always a stand-out feature of any city’s skyline. By researching the top 10 tallest buildings in each city and combining them with Instagram hashtags, we can now reveal the top 10 most Instagrammed city skylines – and the results might surprise you.
1. Paris – 6.6 million hashtags

Paris is the most Instagrammed skyline in the world, thanks to the famous Eiffel Tower. Originally constructed in 1887, the tower stands at 324m and has over six million hashtags. The second most Instagrammed building, Tour Montparnasse, an office building, is over 100m shorter than the Eiffel Tower.
2. Dubai – 5 million hashtags

Dubai’s skyline is the second most Instagrammed skyline, thanks to the iconic Burj Khalifa. Standing at 828m tall, the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and had over 5mil hashtags. The second most Instagrammed building in the city is the JW Marriott Marquis Dubai Tower. At 355m tall, it dwarfs in comparison to the Burj Khalifa.
3. New York – 3.8 million hashtags

As one of the most famous skylines, it’s no surprise that New York has ranked so highly. The most Instagrammed building in the city is the Empire State Building, with over 2mil hashtags and a height of 449m. However, the ESB isn’t the tallest building in the city – that accolade goes to the One World Trade Center, at 546m.
4. Tokyo – 1.6 million hashtags

Tokyo’s tallest structure is the Tokyo Skytree, a broadcasting tower, standing at 634m high. The Skytree is also the tallest structure in Japan. However, the tower isn’t the most Instagrammed tall building in the city. The Tokyo Tower, standing at 333m had over 1m hashtags.
5. Toronto – 1.4 million hashtags

Toronto’s high ranking mostly stems from its tallest structure, the CN Tower, with over 1.3m hashtags. At 553m tall, the tower was the world’s tallest free-standing structure until the Burj Khalifa was built in 2012. Today, it is the most famous part of the Toronto skyline.
6. London – 865,000 hashtags

Despite having some of the most famous tall buildings in the world, such as The Shard, London only placed sixth on the most Instagrammed skylines list. At 310m tall and housing an exclusive hotel, The Shard is London’s most snapped tall building – with over 789,000 hashtags.
7. Chicago – 411,000 hashtags

Chicago is home to the third tallest building in the US – Willis Tower. At 442m high, the famous tower has just under 392,000 hashtags. The second tallest building in the city is the Trump International Hotel and Tower.
8. Kuala Lumpur – 364,000 hashtags

Kuala Lumpur makes it into the top 10 thanks to the Petronas Towers. Standing at 452m tall, the towers were once the tallest in the world. However, they are still the world’s tallest twin towers. The second tallest building in Kuala Lumpur is The Exchange 106, an office building.
9. Shanghai – 143,000 hashtags

Shanghai’s place in the top 10 is due to the mega-tall Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China, standing at 632m. With 97,000 hashtags, the tower is popular on Instagram as it is the second tallest building in the world. However, the tower hasn’t been quite so popular with tenants – until 2018, it was only half occupied.
10. Istanbul – 138,000 hashtags

Istanbul rounds out the top 10 with a respectable 138,000 hashtags. The tallest building in the city is Metropol Istanbul Tower, a mixed use tower standing at 301m. The tower isn’t the most Instagrammed in the city – that accolade goes to Emaar Square, a popular hotel, which has 45,877 hashtags.

We then looked for the 10 tallest buildings in 25 cities and calculated how many Instagram hashtags each building had to create rankings.
